Chapter Ten

Upon entering her room, Kim went straight for the side table and the book. It wasn’t there. She searched about, opening drawers, thinking perhaps Haley had tucked it away.

Where was it? Jammer had followed Kim into the room. Suddenly, a soft meow got Kim’s attention.

As she walked toward the window, her foot made contact with something. The book! It lay open on the floor by the window.

“What are you doing here?” Kim spoke out loud. Jammer rubbed his cheek along the side of the book, nuzzling it.

Kim picked the book up. It lay open at the beginning of a chapter.

“The Legend of Rawlings Mannakee and his Lost Gold.” Kim whispered the title.

Quickly she changed and went down to sit on the porch. Kim had spied the old bench swing the first day she’d arrived. It seemed the perfect spot to lay and read.

Haley poked her head around the corner. “I see you’ve found a suitable perching spot for reading?”

“Is this okay? If you have something that needs doing…” Kim went to get up, but Haley’s hand stopped her.

“No. Just sit and relax. You haven’t had a moment of rest since you got here.” She went back inside.

Jammer looked up at Kim, waiting for an invitation to sit with her on the bench.

“Come on up, big boy.” Kim patted the cushion. Jammer jumped up and settled himself in.

Rawlings Mannakee had been a real character. Between the book and Harry’s story, Kim was finding out that Clanwilliam had quite the history. She smiled, thinking of Lillian’s opinion of the town. Lillian always said the town had little to it, that it was a ‘nothing place’. Well, apparently there was something to it. Kim was determined to find out everything she could. Oh, how she’d love to solve the mystery of Rawlings Mannakee!

Was Rawlings Mannakee murdered for his gold or by the father of the unmarried girl? Had Rawlings Mannakee even been murdered? His body had never been found. Was the legend of his gold even true? No one had ever found the gold or his money.

Kim turned her attention to Jammer. “I don’t know about you, but I want to know the answers to this mystery.”

He purred, giving Kim a nudge.

It was after noon when Kim finally put the book down. She’d combed the chapter several times. The more she read, the more she was convinced that what was going on at Haley’s property wasn’t a coincidence.

Haley had sandwiches on the go when Kim and Jammer came into the kitchen.

“Hungry?” Haley smiled, pouring Kim a large glass of milk.

“Yes, trying to figure the mystery of Rawlings Mannakee out has led me near to starvation.” Kim laughed.

“We can’t have that. Come sit and eat.”

“Why hasn’t anyone ever figured out where the Mannakee land is?” Kim asked between bites.

“The town hall, where all the records had been kept, burned down in 1895—just months after Rawlings’ death.”

“But people would have known where he lived and where his land was,” Kim insisted.

Haley sighed. “No. There were very few people here then.
